Over the years I have experimented with numerous feeders, plants and all kinds of different methods of attracting the widest variety of birds into my garden.   I have encouraged and helped many keen friends as well as curious and passionate people in my neighborhood to enliven their gardens and backyards by attracting the most beautiful and charming birds into their gardens. In my endeavours, the things I got asked about the most were “what kind of bird feeder to use”, “which is the best bird feeder”, “where to place my feeders”, “what seed should I put in my feeders”, “how do I  get the squirrels to back off from the feeders”,  “how to get the the birds I want to see to visit my garden” and however incredulous this might sound, “how to stop birds from smashing into my windows”!

Wouldn’t it be great to invite different charming sounds, colours and feathers into your garden, or neighborhood? Apart from the sheer joy that you would create and receive, you would also be helping create a wonderfully helpful ecosystem for the birds. Feeding birds helps them by providing easy food sources during severe winters and harsh migration periods. It also helps birds collectively by fostering our understanding of and affection for them.

Insect control: Many birds eat a variety of insects, such as spiders, mosquitoes and other undesirable bugs that are unwanted in the garden and premises.

Pollination: Birds like hummingbirds and orioles sip nectar and are lively pollinators of garden flowers. Attracting these kinds of birds will increase the bloom in your flower beds manifold.

Weed control: You might be fed up with unwanted weeds, despite your best efforts to tend to them. However, if you invite sparrows, finches and towhees, they will consume a lot of weed seeds, which will undoubtedly help in controlling the growth of undesirable plants.

Conservation of Wildlife: Apart from receiving these benefits, you will be contributing a great deal to the conservation of wildlife. As more habitats become threatened through developmental projects, inviting birds into your backyards provides a crucial sanctuary for birds and wildlife. Your efforts or hobby will benefit not only local bird species but also migrating birds.

Time in the Sun: For those of you that barely get out, this will provide that added impetus to get out in the Sun. This alone has many health benefits, including providing that vital vitamin D we all require. There is nothing but joy to be gained in fostering this healthy interaction with the outside and the creatures of the sky.

Choosing the right bird feeder for your needs can be some what confusing. Here are some quick pointers on what to consider while purchasing a bird feeder:

  1. Which birds do you want to attract?: Always keep in mind that bird feeders and birds go hand in hand. Different kinds of bird feeders attract different kinds of birds. So, if you want to attract hummingbirds, you will need a humming bird feeder. However, it is rarely as plain and direct as the name of the feeder suggests.
  2. Types of Feeders: There are about 5 basic kinds of feeders and the others, for example, the Nyjer bird feeder or the ground feeder are variations of the same basic feeder design. Different birds prefer different feeders, depending on:
    1. the design of the feeder, whether it is a tube or hopper etc
    2. how they choose to feed, sitting vs hanging vs clinging
    3. the seed or mix in the feeder and;
    4. the placement of the feeder
  3. Durability and Finishing: Now, while you want a pretty and attractive looking feeder, it is important to ensure that the feeder is of high quality material and provides you with a good warranty. You should keep an eye out for good finishing in the make of the feeder whether it is made from metal, wood, glass or plastic. Inspect it for any possible cracks or loose hinges that might leak later on. The best bird feeders are durable, can endure a  harsh winter and are sturdy enough to last you several years at best.
  4. Seed capacity and Seed Dispensing: Although feeders come in a variety of different shapes and sizes,  you decide what size best suits your purposes, however,  it is important to consider the kind of seed dispensing capability the feeder has; how the seed is dispensed is most important for the birds and your peace of mind. Basically, make sure the feeder you choose doesn’t require you to shake it every 15 mins to get the seed to drop out!
  5. Squirrel proof: Let’s not forget about these guys, although they are cute and furry, they can prove to be a major nuisance to maintaining feeders. So you want to make sure that the feeder is well guarded. Squirrels can find their way in almost everywhere, but the best way to keep them away, is to install a squirrel proof feeder or the next best option is  to attach a baffle on the pole on which your feeder is placed. You can read more about this here
  6. Ease of cleaning: How easily your feeder comes apart for cleaning is crucial to maintaining you feeder. you should clean your feeders frequently, 2-3 time a week at least. if your feeder can be taken apart and put back together it is a huge bonus and really helps to keep it clean. a lot of time there are leftover seeds, bird or squirrel droppings and other filth that needs regular cleaning. remember, birds love a clean feeder and will keep returning only if you keep it that way!
