I have come up with the best resource to help you find among the best squirrel proof bird feeders. I know squirrels are annoying. However, you also find them amusing and might even catch yourselves smiling at their colorful antics to try and get at the seeds in the feeder. It is quite amazing to see them in action and observe their extreme dexterity, agility, and sheer determination to get the seeds out of from the feeder. Wherever possible, the policy of a little for the squirrels and a lot of the birds works just fine for most people I know. However, I know that the real problem begins when your policy does not seem to satisfy the squirrels, and they take their share and then some.
So, what can you do besides the baffles and chili powder and the wires and plastic bottles’; basically besides all that time and effort and no real success?

Well, the answer is simple; install a squirrel proof bird feeder. You might have heard that before, however, I am not just advocating any random product names and squirrel proof feeders that are just the namesake and don’t get the job done. I have used 3 of these, and the seen the other 2 in action in a friends yard. They work very well and cause no harm to the squirrels. Let’s take a look at them.bird feeding buster is way up there on my list of the best squirrel proof feeders of 2017. The feeder has a patented and ingenious method of barricading the squirrels from the seed. The feeder has a shroud at the bottom with openings that align with seed ports. Once a squirrel jumps on, its weight forces the shroud down closing the seed ports at the bottom of the feeder, leaving the squirrels hanging helplessly. There is also an adjustable spring which, allows you to prevent large birds from getting the seeds as well. However, with a simple twist of the spring at the top, you can choose to give them access to the seeds if you wish.
It comes with an optional post-grip ring system designed especially for Cardinals. In my experience, Cardinals prefer to grip a thick perch and face their food directly. They rarely turn their heads while eating. This perch system is designed specifically with the behavior in mind, while providing a secure and comfy perch to sit on. It is just perfect for attracting cardinals.
You can disassemble and re-assemble within seconds without any tools. Another added convenience is that it can clean in the dish washer without hassle. It works!
You can fit a lot of seeds, about 3 quarts full of food and there are six feeding stations.
You could hang it over a window, in a tree, on a deck, a fence, in your garden, on the side of your house, from a rain trough or over sliding doors. There is absolutely no need to worry about the squirrels getting your seed.
Brome provides you with a lifetime factory warranty for this product. The product is, however, slightly more expensive than others like it on (Amazon), this might be an issue for a lot of people. Also, the only minor issue with this product is the fact that some birds have trouble getting used to it. For example, they have to stick their heads into the feeder, and it take a while for them to learn to do this. Overall, this is an excellent product.
As the name suggest, this squirrel proof bird feeder is the same company and in the fact that feeder is an upgrade of this one. It shares similar features with its bigger more expensive brother. The Brome classic has a wire shroud surrounding the tube canister. Openings in the wire shroud align with seed feeder ports and provide birds access to the seeds. When the squirrel climbs on, it’s weight (even that of a little squirrel) pulls the shrouder down, and barricades the seeds. Simple, yet extremely effective.
The seed ports have perches for perching birds, and the wire shroud provides good surfaces for clinging birds as well, such as nuthatches and woodpeckers. You can also remove the perches to discourage large birds such as dives or grackles.
The transparent seed tubes trap solar energy. The seed tube ventilation system permits humidity and warm air to escape through waterproof vents at the top, and this is replaced by fresh air from the bottom. This system, ensure that the seeds remain fresh.
It comes apart as easily as its big and improved brother, but it isn’t quite as dishwasher friendly. It has a smaller seed capacity of about 1 and a half quarts and like its brother can be placed about anywhere.
The only minor issue that I faced with this feeder is the long cable that holds the feeder, however, this is hardly much of an issue and with a little ingenuity, you can find a way around it.
Overall, just a great product at half the price of the newer and improved Brome product and with equal effectiveness.
This Woodlink product is a great classic hopper, and I simply love this feeder. It is one the best squirrel proof bird feeders that give you huge value for money. It too has a weight sensitive defense mechanism, which shuts the seed ports when a squirrels’ heavier weight triggers the system.
The feeder has a powder-coated steel body, with two perches on opposite sides that can be adjusted for three levels to allow varying sizes of birds to feed on the perches. You can attract a lot of birds with this set up; I frequently have around ten birds feeding at the same time from my feeder.
There is a top lock, which denies squirrels entry from the top in addition to the weight control mechanism. Also, you can save bird seed with the help of the baffle designed specifically for this purpose.
Woodlink throws in a 5-foot black powder coated mounting pole with a ground socket for optional pole mounting and a steel hanger with this product, which is truly a great help and value for money in setting up the feeder.
Another great aspect; is the seed capacity. The feeder can hold up to a whopping 12 pounds of seed at a time, so you don’t have to worry about filling it over and over again.
Although the feeder keeps out 90% of the squirrels, I have come across that special one percent that has figured out how to hang with one foot from the roof of the feeder and get at my seeds. Still keeps most of them out, though!
The feeder is a bit expensive, but cheaper than the Brome 1024 buster, and gives you a whole lot of value.
This all red Perky Pet bid feeder looks great and works pretty great as well. It comes with an attached steel hanger for easy placement and an optional attachment for mounting on a pole as well.
It employs pretty much the same system as the feeders I’ve described so far. Anything heavier than a bird brings the perch down and shuts off the seed port. The kicker is that not only does the squirrel get no food, because of the ingenious design of the slanting perch, but the squirrel also falls off as well. Just like with the other feeders, this perch too has a tiny screw on the hinge of the perch so that you can adjust the perch for varying weights of birds.
The steel hanger and roof come apart very easily. This house feeder can be filled to store 12 pounds of seed as well. The large windows on the front are attractive and allow to you check the level of seed at a glance.
While most squirrel proof feeders are quite ugly, this one is attractive. It is painted with a beautiful two red color accents and has a galvanized roof with a country style cardinal weathervane.
It is very affordable, in fact, the cheapest so far and provides great value.
It works to keep the majority of the seed from squirrels, but they do get away with tiny amounts. However, with the next feeder in the list, you will not face any such problem.
This bird feeder is unique in that it employs a shocker system to shock squirrels with an electric current. Don’t get too shocked just yet! It is completely safe and the voltage administered is extremely mild; just about enough to surprise the squirrel. The shocker only startles squirrels and not birds. To understand why and to know more, you can click here.
There is a shocker on the top baffle as well as below on the perch. Any squirrel that visits this feeder will never return, and you can be rest assured he will tell his friends as well!
This hopper feeder is quite large and has eight feeding ports. It can store up to 14 pounds of bird seed, depending on the kind of seed. It comes with a hanger and there is also the option of mounting it on a pole, but they do not include the pole.
You will need a 9v battery to charge the shocking system. Now, while there is no harm done to the squirrels or the birds, I have not used this feeder because I quite enjoy the antics of squirrels, and my other feeders work quite well to keep them at bay. My friend Michelle, on the other hand, is very protective of her seed and birds and finds this feeder quite useful. If you are over protective like her, then this is the feeder for you.
It is the most expensive in my list of the best squirrel proof bird feeders. However, the feeder works pretty well should you choose to buy it.
